Assisi

April 6th, 2006

The Central Institute for the Restoration of the Ministry for Cultural Wealth and Activities, in the presence of the former Minister Rocco Buttiglione, inaugurated the restoration and replacement of the veil of St. Matthew, of the starred vault and the transversal rib of the Basilica Superiore di San Francesco ad Assisi. In this context, the architectural recovery was enriched by the use of the most modern Augmented Reality solutions which have transformed the visit to the Basilica into an immersive experience of high profile education. A part of the fresco vault, collapsed during the earthquake of 1997, only partially been recovered, has been temporarily augmented with ARchitecture.

For the occasion, a wearable technological platform, PC integrative, system of magnetic tracking and a visor with integrated camera, permitted the addition to the damaged vault of a 3Dmodel of the starred vault and transversal rib in their original state, offering the possibility to move around the inside of an area sensitive to the tracking system, move the head and admire, through the visor, the real enriched by a hyper-realistic virtual. The project was realised by Seac02 for software implementation, with the collaboration of Architettura SAT Survey studio and Gea Media Group, that offered the 3D models and hardware necessary. Projects such as this aid the initiatives of Edutainement ( Education & Entertainment), supporting the work of researchers, scholars and architects, and in the specific case of Assisi increasing the level of comprehension of the work carried out by tens of restorers occupied for 160.000 hours with the recovery of an artistic patrimony of inestimable value.

3D Video Calls

February 19th, 2006

At a WIND dealership in the centre of the Olympic city, the population of Turin 2006 experimented with a new mode of communication: the three-dimensional video-call. Thanks to the technology of WIND and seac02 two interlocutors can see each other in a three-dimensional monitor, as if they were face to face.

It is an exciting experience, but simple and solid from a technical operation viewpoint and it represents a step towards video-presence, along a path which will end when the interlocutors no longer perceive the difference between communicating via artificial means and real-life. The phone call, the video call, now the three-dimensional video-call, thanks to WIND and seac02. The users communicate with each other from remote positions via highly technological cameras and monitors that allow three-dimensional and hyper-realistic visualisation (SeeReal Technologies).

The controlling software by seac02 permits the user to see the three-dimensional image in real time of the distant interlocutor, not only to speak to him and hear his voice.

More and Virtual Mirror

February 17th, 2006

At More, the International jewellery fair, seac02 presented for the first time the Virtual Mirror. From 17 to 20 February the visitors to More experienced the emotion of a virtual test wearing costly and precious jewellery without even touching it.

The Virtual Mirror, housed in a refined structure devised by Giorgio Correggiari, allows not only the wearing of precious jewellery without risk of damage but also the trying and evaluating of the various choices of jewellery available in different colours and designs.
